Where home, worship, and the community meet. Something Out Of Nothing: S.O.O.N.

What started as a neighborhood gathering of friends around storytelling and food has grown into a church plant, in partnership with St. Mark Houston. We are a church for all people, an inner-city church ministering on the edges, connecting with people who do not yet have a church home. Currently we are in the process of chartering as a new church in the Houston Third Ward community!

Our vision for 2023 is more self and community awareness through biblical teaching, Holy Spirit awakening, and serving the community and one another.

We have four core values:

  1. Reciprocity (Luke 6:38)

  2. Justice and Mercy (Micah 6:8, Mark 12:31)

  3. Biblical Hospitality (1 Timothy 3:2)

  4. Being Evangelically Present (Matthew 5:14-16)

Statement of Beliefs

We believe in the infallible Word of God as revealed to us from God in The Holy Bible, therefore, we believe in traditional values and Christ-centered justice and mercy. We accept all people to come to the Cross of Jesus Christ so that through repentance and confession they can receive the forgiveness of their sins and renewal of their faith in Christ Jesus.

We believe that God is expressed in the Holy Trinity - the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We express and affirm our understanding of His Triune Nature, His mystery, and the work of the Holy Spirit in and through the Church as confessed in the Apostles’s Creed.

We believe that the Church is the Body of Christ, and that through the Holy Spirit the Church receives healing, grace, mercy, and spiritual gifts to walk effectively with God and our neighbors. The Church is to be God’s hands and feet in expressing His justice and mercy in our lives, homes, community, and city.

We believe, as the Scriptures say, that God is present in the preaching and hearing of His Word, in baptism, and in the participation in Holy Communion. We believe that by participating in these sacraments by faith, the person is given faith and thereby empowered to walk rightly with God and their neighbor.

Here is a small glimpse of Something Out Of Nothing Church

Once a month (typically the 4th Sundays) we have worship in the “typical” style of a scripture reading, message, confession, communion, and music. The rest of the Sundays we do what we call “Circle Time” which is an in-depth dive and discussion into the Bible and of course have great music. Come join us any Sunday!

“People loving People. People helping People. Those are phrases how I would describe the leadership of SOON Third Ward Church Pastor Howard and Alyssa Thomas. SOON Third Ward Church will help you learn the the word of God by  preaching and teaching. What excites me is knowing that you'll hear the word of God made simple to your understanding.

— Robert Gaskin

“I enjoy SOON because it's more than a Sunday morning church.  We are an all week church, helping with Operation Love at Blackshear Elementary, cookout on the lawn, Sunday night church on the lawn, Christmas caroling in the neighborhood, knocking on doors to tell the neighbors about Jesus' love, neighborhood prayer walks and more.”
